CHASE THE DEVIL.

 

Cannon roared, men screamed in death, pain and defiance as the opening shots of battle broke the relative silence among the hills around Arapiles, south of Salamanca, on Tuesday 22nd July 1812.

Chase the devil is one of the finest historical fiction books I have ever had the pleasure to  write.

Set in 1812 at the battle of Salamanca Spain the greatest battle of the century was to begin, and was to prove one of the bloodiest battles during the whole peninsular wars. 

The battle of Salamanca took place Between Lord Wellington forces, and those of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Although the Battle is a part of history my characters in this book are totally fictional. 

"Chase the Devil," depicts a fight between the forces of Captain Robert Lockhart of the 5th of Foot the Northumberland Regiment, and a French Major named Duval. 

Duval is a butcher of men and is noted for his absolute evil, and a man who takes no prisoners  and is Duval is nicknamed by his own men as the "Devil."

Ex-soldier and Newcastle nightclub bouncer Jack Hammond is an agent in a secret department of the government known as the ‘Diplomatic Investigation Unit,’ this unit is under the direct control of a department deep within the Home Office with direct secure links to the Foreign Office and MI6.

 

This clandestine department is responsible for ensuring that MPs and senior civil servants do not betray, engage in illegal activity or divulge sensitive information to a person or persons unknown, and if foul play is suspected the information is passed to the DIU for action.

The function of the DIU is simple and straight forward to correct situations created by serving politicians and civil servants that could, or would, do immense damage to security, resulting in a worldwide conflict of trust between this country and other nations.

In order to prevent such a disaster, the DIU was set up as a secret unit known only to a handful of people in the Home Office allowing the unit to work outside of the law with total immunity from prosecution.

Jack Hammond is authorised to investigate, intercept and if necessary, to rectify the situation using extreme prejudice.

During his engagement in the DIU, Hammond has ‘rectified’ a number of threats to the nation’s security but the one he is about to undertake would be a fight to the death against professional and highly dangerous people engaged in a military coup.

Captain Robert Lockhart of the 5^th of foot the Northumberland regiment vowed revenge after the slaughter of his man as they slept on the banks of the Niagara River. They had been attacked in the dead of night by a tribe of Mohawks under the command of Major Philippe Duvall a French officer nick named “The devil” by his own men.

Many years later, Robert is to catch up to him in Spain while his unit is serving under the command of the Lord Wellington at the battle of Salamanca on 20^th of July 1812. The story starts when Robert is sent with a small detachment to find a weak point in the French defenses
. And this is where the story begins and finally finishes back in Canada on the banks of the river Niagara.

Lady Dianna Scott Cartwright is dead on her bed with a hole in her forehead, the lady is fully dressed and now the late wife of Sir James Cartwright Diplomatic Ambassador to Honduras.

The body is inspected by Jack Hammond who is a detective in the Diplomatic Investigation Unit, an invisible unit responsible for the security and integrity of the government. His brief is simply to investigate misuse and serious corruption of power by serving politicians and if necessary is to proceed with extreme prejudice. The murder of the Lady leads Hammond into the murderous world of a “Snuff
Film” gang operation ran by two very senior politicians. This is later confirmed by the themes police in a news report that a number of bodies of homeless people were among those of young gay men floating in the Thames River with the same ligature markings and method of death.

Hammond finally uncovers the names of the politicians and sets out to “correct” the situation with his normal enthusiasm to do what the law wont. To Hammond the law is in the hands of the beholder….and as he is the beholder….his law is in his hands.

There comes a time in a man’s life when he has to stand up and be counted. Today that man is Jack Hammond of the Diplomatic Investigation Unit. During his investigation into the murder of Lady Dianna Scott Cartwright, Hammond realises that there are many similarities between the ladies death, and the death of others, mainly homeless people, gay people and prostitutes who suffered and died in the most horrendous of circumstances.

As his investigation progresses, Hammond stumbles across a “snuff film” gang ran by two senior politicians, and after conferring with his seniors, Hammond is told to use his digression and to deal with the situation as he sees fit.

This Hammond does and although his methods are unorthodox they bring results.
